Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous, or NOS, it is a chemical compound made up of two nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, with the formula N2O.
At room temperature, it is a colorless, non-flammable gas with a slightly sweet scent and taste. At elevated temperatures, nitrous oxide acts as a powerful oxidizer, similar to molecular oxygen.
Much like hospital oxygen systems, nitrous oxide can be stored either as a cryogenic liquid or as liquid nitrous oxide in compressed gas cylinders for controlled medical and industrial use.

SAFETY
Critical Safety Protocols for Medical Nitrous Oxide
Occupational Hazard
Airborne Safety for Staff
- 1. Nitrous oxide is minimally metabolized (0.004%) and remains potent when exhaled.
- 2. Exhaled gas in poorly ventilated rooms can affect surgeons, nurses, and dentists.
Ventilation & Controls
Air Management Systems
- 1. Use a continuous-flow fresh-air ventilation system or N₂O scavenger system.
- 2. Prevents accumulation of waste gases in clinical environments.
