Acetylene (C₂H₂)
Acetylene is a chemical compound composed of two carbon and two hydrogen atoms, with the formula C₂H₂. It features a triple carbon bond and has a linear structure with a CH bond angle of 180°.
It is widely known as one of the most popular fuel gases used around the world, especially in welding and cutting applications. However, it is also considered one of the most dangerous gases due to its instability. In its pure form, acetylene is odorless, but commercial grades carry a distinct odor from impurities like divinyl sulfide and phosphine.
Due to its unstable nature, acetylene is generally stored as a dissolved gas in cylinders filled with a porous material made of calcium silicate and saturated with acetone. This solution method allows acetone to absorb up to eight times its volume in acetylene gas, making it a safe and efficient storage method.
Acetylene is known for being the hottest and most efficient of all fuel gases. It offers a high flame temperature and excellent localized heating, which makes it ideal for precision welding, brazing, and metal cutting applications.
